The United States Department of Education, known as the ED for Education, is a cabinet-level department of the United States federal government. It is responsible for managing the public school system in the United States and implementing policy related to education. In the United States, the department is part of the executive branch of the government and part of the U.S. Department of Education. As the largest office of the department, it handles a wide array of administrative and management responsibilities. The department has the responsibility of implementing policies related to student aid, elementary and secondary education, college and university financing, disabilities, federal workplace education, and vocational education.

In its broader sense, the department of education does much more than managing schools. It implements many policy related to education. For example, the department of education develops policies related to student aid and student loans, Pell Grants, postsecondary institutions, workforce training, veteran’s benefits, and the National Identifier Standards, among others. Policy related to teachers is also determined by the department of education. As a cabinet-level department, it has regular meetings with Federal Cabinet officials to discuss issues related to the nation’s education system.



The mission and goals of the department of education are set forth in the Education Act of 1993. The act calls for an equal opportunity for students to pursue higher education and provides for the protection of education resources. Among these objectives are the implementation of policies related to teacher quality, student testing, teacher compensation, and student mobility. The department of education also implements strategies for promoting the successful completion of the K-12 education, ensuring quality student test scores, and encouraging parents to home school their children.

The Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) is administered by the department of education. Under the FFELP, loan funds are made available for students who cannot afford to pay for their college educations due to a financial hardship. To qualify for these loans, a student must demonstrate extreme financial need and the inability to pay for an education. To facilitate the application process, the department of education set up two offices – one at the federal Office of Federal Student Aid (OFS), and one within each state, designated by each state’s attorney general.



The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (FDL) program began operations in 2007. The FDL is the department’s direct program that is designed to help students attain a degree through a college or university. The Direct Loan program is administered directly by the Department of Education. Unlike other Direct Loans, the FDL does not require students to have a credit score and does not need any collateral. In addition, unlike some private sector Direct Loans, the Department of Education does not evaluate the borrower’s EFC or income before approving the loan.

There are two cabinet-level organizations that administer federal education programs. One is the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The CHEA was created by the U.S. Department of Education and its mission is to ensure that all colleges and universities meet high standards of academic quality and federal policy mandates. The CHEA evaluates all colleges and universities on a yearly basis to determine whether they are worthy of federal policy funding. All institutions of higher education are required to participate in this organization, which includes a board of directors who report directly to the secretary of education.



The other Cabinet-level organization administering education programs is the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA/CHEA-CCA). The CHEA/CCA assesses all colleges and universities in the country on an annual basis to determine if they are worthy of federal funding. Both of these organizations have come under fire in recent years because of their questionable methods. The CHEA/CHEA-CCA often gives students higher interest rates than schools that are not accredited, and the schools accredited by the CHEA/CCA fail to measure up to the Department of Education’s expectations. These two organizations must renew their accreditation with the U.S. Department of Education in order to continue providing federal funding.
