When you start your own small business, you need to ask yourself one question: Do you want to be a working manager or a managing manager? A lot of people start thinking, what does that mean? What good would that do me and her? Which way should I go? The real question is, where do I go about managing my business?
A working manager is one who gets his hands on every aspect of the business and does everything. Meeting people, marketing, even throwing trash. A managing manager is one who tells people where to go and how to do it.
At the beginning of all small businesses, a working manager is the way to go, but as your company grows, a managing manager does what you are doing. Now it’s up to your business and where you want to go with your small business.
I have seen that a person has a lot of business and development and this business is 5 to 10 years old and it is good. But I’ve seen small businesses go to 10 people and that’s good.
You must look at all aspects of your business. You have to look at the future of your business and see where it is going. Or do you have to think about it, do I keep it as an individual business or do I start hiring people to cover all areas of my business? Again, this depends on the nature of your business.
Example: I’ve seen a person with a backpack go to work for 15 people. I have seen a support type of business in an individual operation. I’ve seen a personal business card dealer live as a personal business and I’ve seen a basketball business that goes into a 5 person operation.
The list goes on and on, I’ve talked to all of these business owners, from going from one personal action to 20 personal actions, when they had to do business.
But all of them have told me that they started out as working managers and allowed the nature of their company to grow, that they needed to work.
The benefits of being a working manager are that you have control over everything and you see what’s going to happen and you’re responsible for it. The advantage of a managing manager is that you have staff who do all this for you and they take charge of the duty and the job and you see what is happening.
It doesn’t matter which side you take, there is nothing wrong with that. Just let the nature of the business move in the direction it needs to go. When you allow it, it will flow easily and you will fix it.
